Shem grew up in a double-wide trailer in Hayden, Idaho. It was in this humble environment where his parents instilled in him values of faith, hard-work, honesty, social justice and equal opportunity for success. In addition, his parents stressed the importance of education. They worked hard to send him to Christian Center School in Hayden. He graduated at the top of his class, and the education that he received at that school prepared him to go to, and succeed at, Eastern Washington University where he graduated with two Bachelor's of Arts Degrees in History.
As a Hanks, his family has been in this country since before it was a country, settling in 1654. Family and heritage have been important parts of Shem's life. One of the members of this lineage is Nancy Hanks. Nancy Hanks is the birth-mother of Abraham Lincoln. Shem believes that the family of Lincoln will always stand-up for social justice and equality. With both of these values under attack once again, Shem is ready to step to the plate and fight to protect these inalienable rights.
Now, Shem is running for the Idaho House of Representatives in District 4 (Coeur d'Alene) Seat B. He is running to fight for the working class of Coeur d'Alene. He is running to bring the right to decide minimum wage back to Idaho's communities. He is running because he does not believe that servers deserve to make $3.15 an hour. He is running because we already pay for Medicaid but our legislature has failed us in not expanding Medicaid in Idaho. He is running because we do not have a broken education system, we have a broken legislature that refuses to fund and value education properly.
This November, we are going to #voteHanks. Are you?
